The method

Start here

First, here is an overview of the steps involved in this study method. Believe me, they are all important.

There is no need to skip any of them; most of them are quite short, so no worries. After you have read this part, you can choose to find out more for every part, or you can go to work and blow away your teacher with the grades you'll get.

The steps, all seven of them

1. Exposure

To learn something new, you need to have something in writing, spoken words or even images. Whatever the means, there needs to be exposure to content. Read more.

2. Set goals

Goals define what you are going to learn. This can be something you receive from your teacher, or it can be a goal you set for yourself. It is always best to set your own goals, or adopt the educational goals as your own. Read more.

3. Planning

You want to know how long this laborious task is going to take you. When you're in class, your teacher will tell you when something needs to be finished, or when certain knowledge needs to have been obtained. This is important for tracking your progress. Most importantly, though, you need to know when you can go back to relaxing and stuff. Read more.

4. Focus

This one may sound most obvious of all, but it's not an easy one. A lot of people fail in learning because they get distracted. Maintaining focus is key to studying efficiently. Read more.

5. Remember

Although remembering should not be the main focus of your learning cycle, learning does constitute a relatively permanent change in behaviour. This means you need to remember the important parts that will help you get things done. Read more.

6. Understand

How can you learn something if you don't understand it? It's easy; just remember it. But seriously, if you don't understand what you are trying to learn, it will be difficult, or maybe simply impossible to work with this new skill or knowledge in the future. Read more.

7. Test yourself

Yes, you are going to have to test yourself to make sure you know what you are supposed to know. This is where you check if you have met your goals. Various ways of testing can be applied. Read more.

The real test

Now that you have a general idea of what studying is all about, you may want to go at it. But, if you're like me, you might need some more information on each of the steps. My advice is that you read a bit more about each of the steps and what makes them work by clicking the buttons below the steps. There are also examples that can be quite useful.

Videos with explanations—for those who don't like reading as much—will soon be available.

Good luck!
