Understand

What does it mean to understand something?

Understanding in different forms

It sounds so obvious; all you have to do is understand what you have remembered. But is it that obvious? And if so, then what does understanding even mean?

Understanding means you know what something is, and it is the first step into applying this new information.

Usually when you understand something you can explain it in your own words. This is therefore a good indicator of understanding. You can also speak of understanding if you can compare information and indicate the diferences. Classifying the different classes of arthropods (biology example) is only possible when you understand what makes them different from each other, for instance.

Critical thinking

I used the term critical thinking here because it is important. You may have heard of critical thinking skills before, but here, I am only going ot touch the surface of it to help you with your studying.

When trying ot understand something, you may often reach a point where you think: 'all right, I understand.'

My question to you would be: do you really understand, or do you think you do? Sometimes people assume they know or understand something, only to realise, thye don't. You can prevent this by thinking critially about it and to not assume you uderstand, or that you will get it later. No; ask yourself short questions based on the material and answer them. This will be more predominant in the next step.
